Angela Smart is a Calgary-based violinist and pianist who has been a vibrant part of the city’s music community for over a decade. Holding both a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in violin performance from the University of Calgary, she blends pedagogy, performance, and interdisciplinary collaboration in her work. Angela has performed as a concert soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and collaborated with artists such as Michael Bublé, Il Divo, and 2Cellos.

Her research into the integration of physical movement with violin performance earned her the prestigious SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) Grant during her Master’s degree studies, and her background in ballet adds a unique kinesthetic awareness to her teaching and performance.

Recently, Angela has been a featured performer in the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show for three consecutive years and appeared in the televised 2023 Juno Awards. She is also the founder of Fretless Femmes, a Calgary-based, all-female contemporary string ensemble. In addition to her classical performances, Angela is known for her versatility, performing across genres as an electric violinist. A certified Royal Conservatory of Music teacher, she has run a private studio in Calgary since 2014. Angela frequently appears as a guest lecturer and clinician for masterclasses in and around Calgary and across Canada.
